History of Cinco de Mayo

Did you know that Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French at the Battle of Pueblo on May 5, 1862?  It is not the Mexican Independence day as many presume.  Thanks to the Good Neighbor Policy of 1933, Cinco de Mayo became more popular in the United States. Today, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the history, art, cuisine, and music of the Mexican culture….and the margaritas…oh those margaritas!  What better way to celebrate the best of Mexico than a fiesta with friends, sharing delicious Mexican-inspired food and decor?  Below is a wonderful recipe for Strawberry Limeade margaritas (by the pitcher) as well as five Cinco de Mayo party tips for the perfect party.

Strawberry Limeade Margaritas Recipe

It’s not a true Cinco de Mayo party without Mexico’s most famous cocktail, the margarita, made with Mexican tequila.  When you have a party, however, you don’t want to keep mixing up small batches of margaritas, you’ll want to create margaritas by the pitcher so you have more time with your guests.  The problem with margaritas by the pitcher is that they often get watered down with ice.  This strawberry limeade margaritas recipe is as sweet and tangy from the moment it is blended until the moment it hits your lips, even if it is sitting in the pitcher a while (but why would anyone let a pitcher of margaritas sit…am I right?!)  And look how pretty it looks in the glass—too bad they don’t last long!

Strawberry Limeade Margaritas 2

  • 1 c. Triple Sec
  • 1/2 c. Fresh Lime Juice
  • 2 c. Fresh Strawberries, cleaned and sliced
  • 1c. Superfine sugar (Not confectioners sugar)
  • 1 Container Frozen Limeade
  • 2 c. Silver Tequila
  • Slices of lime
  • Margarita Salt

Pour 1/2 cup of the lime juice into an ice cube tray and place in the freezer for 3-4 hours.  Place the triple sec, strawberries, superfine sugar, and frozen limeade in a blender and blend until pureed.  Pour the strawberry-lime puree into a glass pitcher.  Add the silver tequila and stir together.

Place the pitcher in the refrigerator.  Just before serving, rim each glass with a slice of lime and dip into the margarita salt.  Remove the lime juice ice cubes from the freezer, place in the pitcher of Strawberry Limeade margaritas, stir, and set the pitcher out with margarita glasses.

Cinco de Mayo Party Tips

  1. Incorporate the vibrant colors of Mexico into your party decor with bright red, yellow, blue, and green plates, glassware, and serving dishes. Colorful tablecloths, napkins, and candles add additional pops of color.  Decorate with fresh flowers in small vases or used tin cans. Dahlia, the national flower of Mexico makes an easy floral centerpiece.
  2. Decorating does not have to be expensive.  Use a zester and create Mexican-style folk art on lemons and limes, then set around the room in bowls.
  3. If the weather is nice, have the party outside…it is May, after all.  A fiesta by the pool with twinkle lights and candles will set the perfect mood.
  4. Plan your music and form a playlist.  While mariachi music is festive, it can be hard to talk above the trumpets.  Mexican bolero or classical guitar music is a better option.
  5. Make food in advance so you can enjoy the party, too.  Slow cook chicken or pork in a crockpot for tacos, make white queso dip, roasted pepper guacamole, and ancho chile lava cakes ahead of time, and don’t forget to whip up a pitcher of Strawberry Limeade margaritas and keep in the refrigerator until the party.  Chop and prepare fixings ahead of time too, and don’t forget the tortilla chips!
