Capture Travel Memories with Your Camera

written by Julie Cohn

When you think back on your favorite travels, what do you remember most?  Do you remember the colors, the textures, the inexplicable tiny moments that make a destination extraordinary?  Did you capture those moments with a photo?  If taking photos when you travel is something you struggle with, here are a few easy tips to capture travel memories with your camera.

Capture Travel Memories with Your Camera 1When I travel, especially when I travel with my son, I seek out unique destinations to keep our travels interesting. As spectacular as the destination, oftentimes it is the tiny hilarious and wonderful moments that make the most impression.  Whether it’s the crickets while glamping in Moab, measuring up to that majestic Redwood tree, a moment of joyful abandon in the sunset surf, or spending the night in a real teepee (motel), it is the photos of those trips that take us back to those moments in time.  Having a camera while traveling is a must.

Research Good Photography Spots Before You Go:  Take a few moments to research the destinations you will be traveling to and find the best off-the-beaten paths to take photos.  For example, did you know one of the best places to take sunset photos in Sedona is at the regional airport?  Sedona airport sits at the top of a mesa overlooking the entire valley.  Because it faces west, it is perfect for gorgeous sunset photos.

Keep a Travel Photography Kit:  I keep a travel camera bag with extra XD memory card, camera battery, battery charger, and lens cloth, so just have to pack my camera and go.  Keeping separate supplies means I never have to worry if I have the right accessories while traveling.

Photograph the tiny moments:  It may seem silly to catch every photo of your son building a sandcastle, your daughter blowing bubbles, or your husbands falling in the pit of mud, but when you look back at those photos later, you will be glad you did, because it is those unexpected moments you will remember most. Having photographic evidence (for posterity or blackmail) keeps those memories alive.

Videotape:  Still shots are wonderful but be sure to take video shots to capture the sounds, voices, and laughter of the moment.
