A New Journey
It has been said that life is a journey, not a destination. A new journey brings forth hopes and fears, doubts and dreams, yet even the smallest root can grow with motivation and encouragement. My family is about to embark on a new journey, one that will lead my son away from our family, guide my husband and I to a new chapter in our life together, and usher me into a new (old) career. C.H. Wente of Wente Vineyards also took a journey, one that took him away from family and friends to a new life, a new career, and a new destiny. Find out how, through hard work and passion, his legacy has endured.
In one month, my son leaves for college. This is frightening and thrilling for our family. My son is kind, adventurous, and brilliant, and I know whatever path he takes (Physics, Writing, Film?), he will blaze new trails and turn the world on its ear. In leaving, he is venturing away from the protective nest of our family where my husband and I have always been able to protect him., but we have to trust that he has learned well and uses that wisdom to on his new path. He will always be my baby, but I am ready to let him go confidently into the world and be a man.
“A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find that after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us.” – John Steinbeck
Carl Heinrich Wente, founder of Wente Vineyards, started a new journey in 1870. Not much older than my son, he left his family farm in Germany to travel to America for a new and better life. Settling in California, he studied wine making under pioneer vintner, Charles Krug, and in 1883, after marriage, CH Wente purchased 47 acres of land in Livermore, California to start his own career as a wine maker. Five generations later, Carl’s great-great-great grandson Karl D. Wente is blazing new trails as a wine grower, producing wines loved throughout the world.
Creating a Legacy
When he planted those first wine roots, do you think Carl Wente imagined that 133 years later his winery would be the oldest family-owned winery in the United States? Do you think he envisioned his family would be called California’s First Family of Chardonnay™ or that his sons would introduce California’s first Sauvignon Blanc? When he plowed those first 47 acres, do you think he imagined his family would someday own more than 3,000 acres of certified sustainable vineyards in Livermore and Arroyo Grande, California? When he bottled his first batch, did Carl foresee that five generations later his family would still be producing quality wines, and that millions of people would enjoy his 100% Estate grown wine every day?
Love of the Journey
Not unlike a grapevine, the path we take in life leads us to something new, the roots stronger with love and care, and the fruits of labor bountiful and sweet. Planting those roots may be intimidating, but can lead to exceptional things. The unknown is both exciting and daunting. C.H. Wente had a dream, and through hard work and determination, that dream was fulfilled beyond his wildest imagination. I pray that our family, through love and hard work, will grow as Wente Vineyards has grown, creating a legacy for generations to come, with family roots strong and intertwined.
